Merle Haggard visits the Country Music Hall of Fame

NASHVILLE, Tenn.---What becomes a legend most? For Merle Haggard, it may be a spontaneous visit to the Country Music hall of Fame.

Recently, to the delight and astonishment of fans, the country music icon dropped in to say hello and look around.

Haggard, who once said he'd like to be remembered first as a guitar player, was particularly interested in the two Jimmie Rodgers guitars that are part of the museum's million-item collection. Pulling up a chair, her gently held one of the instruments and dazzled the assembled crowd with a few riffs.

Laughing at one of his own stage costumes currently on display, a spangly black and silver suit created by famed Hollywood designer Nudie, Haggard revealed that he never really wore it much. "When I wore it, I felt like I was lit up like a Christmas tree," he said.

Accompanied by members of his band, the Strangers, Haggard periodically interrupted his stroll to tell anecdotes inspired by items on display and made a point of lingering at exhibits that paid homage to his own idols - Bob Wills, Lefty Frizzell, and Jimmie Rodgers.

"I think Merle Haggard's visit here was his personal way of honoring the Hall of Famers who have influenced his career," said Hall of Fame Director Kyle Young. "It was a very becoming visit, and one we won't soon forget."

Merle Haggard was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1994.
