American Music Awards Nominees

The nominees for the 33rd Annual American Music Awards were announced. Toby Keith, Tim McGraw, and Gretchen Wilson received two nominations each in the country category. Additionally, Sugarland were nominated in the all-genre Favorite New Artist category in a field that includes the Killers and Jesse McCartney. Comedian/actor Cedric "The Entertainer" will host the ceremony, which will air live on ABC November 22 from Los Angeles. Country nominees are: 

Favorite Male Artist: Kenny Chesney, Toby Keith, Tim McGraw; Favorite Female Artist: Martina McBride, LeAnn Rimes, Gretchen Wilson; Favorite Band, Duo or Group: Big & Rich, Brooks & Dunn, Rascal Flatts; Favorite Album: Honkytonk University, Toby Keith; Live Like You Were Dying, Tim McGraw; Here For The Party, Gretchen Wilson.

Faith Joins Mississippi Natives For Benefit

Faith Hill joined several fellow Mississippi natives, including actor Morgan Freeman and author John Grisham, for Mississippi Rising, a concert to benefit the nonprofit Mississippi Hurricane Recovery Fund. The event was this past Saturday, October 1, on the campus of the University of Mississippi in Oxford and will air live on MSNBC and on television stations throughout Mississippi and Louisiana. Other native Mississippians, including Archie and Eli Manning, Brett Favre, and Sela Ward, appeared at the event, which also featured Steve Azar, Gary Morris, Lance Bass, Brian McKnight, Bernadette Peters, Doris Roberts, Ray Romano, Whoopi Goldberg, Marilu Henner, Kathie Lee Gifford, and many others.

Condolences To Trisha

Trisha Yearwood's father, Jack H. Yearwood, passed away September 20 in Monticello, Georgia at the age of 72. Trisha's performance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno scheduled for September 21 and her Los Angeles Avalon show scheduled for September 22 were postponed to a later date.

Terri Marries

Terri Clark married her longtime friend and tour manager Greg Kaczor on Saturday, September 17, at a resort on Lake Louise in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Clark and Kaczor have known each other since he became her tour manager and began playing acoustic guitar in her band in 1995. Terri and Greg recently purchased a house in Vancouver.

Concerts Postponed Due To Hurricane Rita

Due to the intensifying threat of Hurricane Rita to Houston and the surrounding areas, producers of the CMT One Country concert decided last week to postpone the event until further notice. Originally set for October 1 at Houston's Reliant Stadium, the concert was scheduled to feature George Strait, Kenny Chesney, Alan Jackson, Willie Nelson, Martina McBride, and ZZ Top as a televised fundraiser for victims of Hurricane Katrina. Lonestar, LeAnn Rimes, Gary Allan, Clint Black, and Dierks Bentley are among artists who had to cancel their own shows this past weekend due to Rita.

Martina Performs Live Special for CMT 

Martina McBride will perform a concert before a live audience from the CMT studios in the special Martina McBride: Timeless, premiering Saturday, October 8 on CMT. In this one-hour special, McBride performs the hits that have created her multiple award-winning career and will preview songs from her much-anticipated album, Timeless, set to hit stores October 18.

CMA Awards Presenters 

Emphasizing this year's New York theme, Donald Trump will present one of the trophies during the 39th Annual CMA Awards Show. Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon, who portray Johnny and June Carter Cash in the upcoming film Walk the Line, are also on the list of presenters. The CMA Awards will be hosted by Brooks & Dunn and will air live November 15 from Madison Square Garden in New York. The awards will return to Nashville next year.

VH-1 Concert Features Alison Krauss

The second episode of VH-1 Classic Concert series Decades Rock Live will honor Bonnie Raitt, with Alison Krauss, Norah Jones, Ben Harper, and Keb Mo performing. The show tapes September 30 in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Trace Hosts Benefit For Children's Hospital

Trace Adkins will host and perform at the 2nd Annual We Care for Kids Day on Sunday, October 9, in Nashville. Adkins has also invited country music friends Phil Vassar and Craig Morgan and a few surprise guests to join him for the free concert. The street party is presented by Vanderbilt's Children's Hospital

New Releases

Gretchen Wilson's sophomore CD, All Jacked Up, was released yesterday. Kathy Mattea released Right Out of Nowhere, her first album since 2002's Roses. Mattea produced the album herself, combining original material with cover tunes such as "Gimme Shelter" and "Down on the Corner." Also released yesterday was new music and an autobiography from Wynonna. The live CD and DVD are entitled Her Story: Scenes From a Lifetime, and the book is Coming Home to Myself. Wynonna co-wrote her new single, "Attitude," with John Rich of Big & Rich. The Highwaymen's The Road Goes On Forever -- the 1995 album that united Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, and Willie Nelson on record for the third and final time -- was reissued in an expanded format. And on September 20, Jon Randall released the album Walking Among the Living, which features appearances by Vince Gill and Patty Loveless and Randall's version of "Whiskey Lullaby" (the Brad Paisley/Alison Krauss duet), which he co-wrote with Bill Anderson.

Dierks Bentley was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry this past Saturday night, October 1. Dierks is now the youngest Opry member.

Rascal Flatts Donates To Children's Hospital

Rascal Flatts donated the proceeds from their September 24 concert in Nashville to the Monroe Carell, Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt. The group's donation was $350,000, and their record label, Lyric Street, donated an additional $250,000. The $600,000 donation made the concert the largest fund-raising event ever for the hospital.

Craig Receives Christian Award Nominations

Craig Morgan has received three nominations for the 11th Annual Christian Country Music Awards. His nominations include Mainstream Country Artist Award, Video of the Year Award, and Song of the Year Award for his five-week #1 hit single "That's What I Love About Sunday." The Awards will be held at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville on November 10 and will be broadcast live on Great American Country.

Joan and Melissa Rivers have been tapped to host a red carpet pre-show event for the TV Guide Channel at the 39th Annual CMA Awards show in New York, November 15 at Madison Square Garden.

Shooter Cracks Rib While Performing

During a recent performance in Jacksonville, Florida, Shooter Jennings cracked a rib. While performing "The Letter," Shooter went for the high note at the end and felt a pop from his chest. Turns out he cracked a rib on stage from the pressure of his lungs expanding against his ribs.

Gretchen Postpones Concert Dates

Gretchen Wilson has postponed two concert dates due to "vocal fatigue," October 7 in Huntsville, Alabama and October 8 in Perry, Georgia. New dates for those venues have not yet been announced, but no other tour dates have been affected.

Brad On Extreme Makeover

Brad Paisley made a surprise appearance for the family featured on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition this past Sunday, October 2. Brad is the Barretts' favorite artist, and much to their surprise he came to Colorado to sing "He Didn't Have To Be" as part of the show. After his performance, Paisley visited the makeover site, where they put him to work along with the rest of the construction crew. In other news, Brad's newest single, "When I Get Where I'm Going," is a duet with Dolly Parton. "This is a song I recorded for my aunt who passed away last year. She was very close to me, and I think anybody who's lost someone can relate to this song," Brad said. "One of my aunt's favorite singers was Dolly Parton, so it just makes sense for her to be singing on this record." Brad has also written a song for the Disney presentation of the film CARS, which will be released nationwide next June.

George Announces Tour

George Strait will kick off his US tour in mid-January 2006 and will visit 25 cities through June. Tracy Lawrence has been invited to open for George throughout the entire tour. Strait will once again play to large arenas on a center stage that allows him to face all sides of the crowd throughout the shows. A complete list of 2006 tour dates will be announced soon.

Artists Promote Breast Cancer Awareness

Martina McBride, Terri Clark, Lee Ann Womack, and Jason Aldean are among the celebrities who have voiced public service announcements for the third annual Pink Ribbon Challenge. The fundraising effort runs October 1-31 at thebreastcancersite.com and helps provide free mammograms for underserved and uninsured women.

Trick Pony Heads Overseas

Trick Pony will be taking their high energy honky-tonk live show oversees this month for concerts in Japan and Korea. The band will be performing on October 16 at the 17th Annual Country Gold Festival, the only country music festival in Japan, and at several army bases throughout South Korea.

Buddy Has SEC Football Theme

Buddy Jewell's hit song "Sweet Southern Comfort" has been licensed by ESPN for use during all of its SEC college football telecasts this season.

Kathy Co-Chairs AIDS Walk 

Kathy Mattea and Miss Tennessee Tara Burns will serve as celebrity co-chairs of the Nashville AIDS Walk on October 8. Burns will perform the national anthem prior to the walk.

Billy Joe Marries 

Billy Joe Shaver and Wanda Lynn Canady married on September 26 in Corsicana, Texas. Billy Joe's uncle, Reverend Bill Honea, performed the private ceremony. In related news, Shaver recently taped the theme song for Squidbillies, a new series debuting this fall on the Cartoon Network.
