Big Kenny & Co. Form Save-the-Mountains Initiative
Big & Rich's Big Kenny Alphin has joined Kathy Mattea, Emmylou Harris and Sheryl Crow in co-founding Music Saves Mountains, a push to stop mountaintop removal coal mining in Tennessee and throughout Appalachia. "The beauty of the Appalachian Mountains has inspired countless songs in country, bluegrass, gospel and folk music, and we must do everything possible to protect them," says Kenny. "We're calling on everyone to help keep the 'country' in country music."
Country Fans Pick Carrie as ACM Entertainer of the Year
Carrie Underwood ended Kenny Chesney's lengthy reign as the Academy of Country Music's Entertainer of the Year, on Sunday at the 44th annual ACM Awards. In addition, she snagged the trophy for Top Female Vocalist. Taylor Swift (Album of the Year), Trace Adkins (Single Record of the Year), Jamey Johnson (Song of the Year), Brad Paisley (Top Male Vocalist), Sugarland (Top Vocal Duo), Rascal Flatts (Top Vocal Group) and Julianne Hough (Top New Artist) were the evening's other honorees, with Taylor and Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles also receiving Crystal Milestone Awards in recognition of special achievements they've recently accomplished.
Rich To Grant a Personal Mentoring Experience
John Rich and Crown Royal whiskey have hooked up for a new contest, which offers the winner one heckuva prize: a trip to Nashville to get an inside look at the various aspects of John's country career, plus a signed guitar, a tour of his favorite Music City haunts and a stroll through the Gone Country mansion. Written essays from fans that describe their passion for John's mentorship must be submitted by May 27.
Trace Adkins Recalls Fight-Filled Days of Yore
Trace Adkins has come a long way from the bar circuit, but remembers those rough-and-tumble days quite clearly. "I've gotten into a few [fights] but that comes with the territory when you're playing honky-tonks," he says. "[That's what happens] when cowboys get tanked and aren't able to go to sleep until they've had their brains bashed in." Elsewhere, Trace will participate in the 2009 National Memorial Day Concert on May 24 in Washington, D.C.
Pickler Coming Back to Idol
Kellie Pickler, who finished sixth on the 2006 season of American Idol, will return to the program Wednesday to perform her current single, "Best Days of Your Life." "It's always great to see the gang and feel the excitement from the contestants," says Kellie of Idol. In related news, Miley Cyrus reportedly just prerecorded a performance of her new cut, "The Climb," for air on the April 15 edition of the hit show.
