Story & photos by Glenda S. Paradee The Grand Ole Opry celebrated its 73rd Birthday on October 15-18, 1998 in Nashville, TN. History: On November 28, 1925, Uncle Jimmy Thompson made history with an hour of fiddle music that became the wildly popular WSM Barn Dance. On Saturday evening two years later, Solemn Old Judge George D. Hay noted, "You've been listening to selections taken largely from grand opera, but from here on out, it'll be Grand Ole Opry!" The name stuck, and here we are, 73 years later, celebrating the birth of the longest running radio program in history-the WSM Grand Ole Opry. The Grand Ole Opry Ryman Reunion Celebration was held October 18, 1998 at the original Ryman Auditorium. The event was a benefit the Performer's Benefit Fund. The Performer's Bendfit Fund was created to provide medical assistance to the performers who are the very core of our country music industry. Announcers: Kyle Cantrell, Ralph Emery, Eddie Stubbs Lineup included:
The Performer's Benefit Fund wish to express their sincerest appreciation to the artists, musicians, background singers and support personnel who have so freely and unselfishly given of their time and talents to make this evening possible.
